Community members participate in comprehensive biodiversity monitoring

The project has enlisted the communities, including former loggers and shell fishers, to lead biodiversity monitoring activities. The biodiversity monitoring team is trained and equipped with tools like the “SMART” mobile app which allows them to record the location, number, and type of species they’ve encountered within the project area. Communities also receive training on sustainable agriculture and environmental education. In the 2019 monitoring period (Monitoring Report 2, 2022) communities reported increased sightings of wildlife including Baudó guan, white-lipped peccary, caiman crocodile, and the oncilla. The involvement of community members in the project’s biodiversity monitoring program empowers them to comprehend the significance of local biodiversity conservation while offering income-generating activities that leave the forest undisturbed.
