Community patrol hubs across the project area aid forest protection

Community members have the opportunity to actively protect their land rights and natural resources through the Community Patrol Units (CPUs). The CPUs are supported by DoE (Department of Environment) rangers to ensure effective enforcement of forestry laws; 8 units are currently active across 20 villages in the project zone. CPU teams receive regular training on patrol planning, data collection (e.g. SMART mobile app) and are actively collaborating with local authorities. Within the last monitoring period (2020-2021), >3000 km were covered by community patrols, resulting in 100 written warnings, and the confiscation of >100 illegal items including 49 snares, 40 chainsaws and 15 vehicles*.
