REDD+ is the only mechanism that has shown the potential for stopping deforestation in an equitable way by driving finance directly to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities(IPLCs) in the Global South. And yet, the current voluntary carbon market market has not been designed to meet the needs of communities on the ground, who hold the key to reducing emissions from deforestation.
Time is running out. We urgently need a fit-for-purpose solution to rebuild trust in community-based forest conservation projects. This is a critical mechanism to deliver transformative finance directly to communities to fund their own development ambitions, stop deforestation and biodiversity loss, and help countries achieve national commitments.
The Equitable Earth Coalition is answering that call.
Forest Trends, Wildlife Works and Everland have come together to launch this coalition of leaders, committed to developing a new voluntary carbon market standard and platform for community-centered forest conservation.
Through the Equitable Earth Coalition we are working in partnership with IPLCs and Global South countries to develop a comprehensive, robust and auditable definition of high quality community-centered forest conservation, founded on inclusion and fair rewards, transparency, robust science and rigorous due diligence, that can be nested within national forest programs.
